AHLP provide a fully DBS checked locksmith service for education premises across Bristol and South Gloucestershire. Out-of-hours attendance as standard — work is scheduled outside the school day wherever possible. Fixed price, direct invoicing, no call-out fee.
Each education setting has slightly different security requirements. Here’s what matters most for each.
Primary and secondary schools require controlled main entrance access, secure classroom locks, and key management across a large staff. Emergency repairs must happen outside the school day. Staff changes mean regular lock and key reviews.
Smaller premises with heightened safeguarding requirements. Gate security and restricted access are paramount. Any locksmith working on site must be DBS checked — this is non-negotiable for most nursery managers and Ofsted compliance.
Larger sites with multiple buildings, multiple departments and high staff turnover. Master key systems and restricted key cylinders are common requirements. After-hours working is typically straightforward given college timetables.
All services carried out out of hours wherever possible. Fixed price, direct invoicing available.
Out-of-hours emergency response for broken locks, failed mechanisms and compromised access points. Typically within 30 minutes across Bristol and South Glos.
Re-keying or replacing locks when a member of staff leaves. If restricted key cylinders are already fitted, only the affected cylinder needs replacing — fast and cost-effective.
Cylinders and keys that cannot be copied without written authorisation. Full control over who has access and a complete audit trail. Ideal for schools and nurseries managing staff access.
A single master key operates multiple locks across a building or site. Useful for site managers, heads of department and senior staff who need access to multiple areas without carrying a large key ring.
Ensuring the primary access points to a school or nursery are secure. Lock upgrades, access control assessment, and gate mechanism repairs.
Following a security breach, vandalism, or break-in, Sam will assess the affected access points, replace compromised locks and advise on any upgrades appropriate to what happened.
For any tradesperson working at a school, nursery or college, a current DBS check is not optional — it’s a fundamental safeguarding requirement. Sam holds a current Disclosure and Barring Service check, making him suitable to work at any education premises in Bristol and South Gloucestershire.
The DBS check can be confirmed before any visit if required by your safeguarding policy. We understand that many schools and nurseries need to record the DBS details of any contractor before they arrive on site — just ask when you call and Sam will provide the relevant details.
Out-of-hours as standard. Where the job allows it, AHLP always schedule education premises work outside the school day — before gates open, after pupils and students have left, or during school holidays. This avoids any situation where a contractor needs to be in the building while children are present, which is the preferred approach for most head teachers and nursery managers even where a DBS check is in place.
One of the most common security problems in schools is key proliferation — over time, multiple copies of master keys are made for staff convenience, and when a member of staff leaves, nobody can be certain how many copies exist or where they are. The only solution is a full lock change, which is disruptive and expensive.
A restricted key system prevents this from happening in the first place. The cylinders use a patented keyway that cannot be copied at a standard key-cutting shop. Keys can only be duplicated by the authorised supplier, with written sign-off from the designated key holder at your school or nursery.
When a staff member leaves, only the cylinder assigned to their key needs replacing — not every lock on the site. Over time this is significantly cheaper than managing a non-restricted system, and it gives your business manager or site manager a complete, auditable record of who holds which keys.
