Who we work with

Schools, nurseries & colleges

Each education setting has slightly different security requirements. Here’s what matters most for each.

Schools

Primary and secondary schools require controlled main entrance access, secure classroom locks, and key management across a large staff. Emergency repairs must happen outside the school day. Staff changes mean regular lock and key reviews.

Main entrance Classroom locks Staff key control Emergency repairs

Nurseries & preschools

Smaller premises with heightened safeguarding requirements. Gate security and restricted access are paramount. Any locksmith working on site must be DBS checked — this is non-negotiable for most nursery managers and Ofsted compliance.

Gate security DBS requirement Restricted access Ofsted compliance

Colleges & further education

Larger sites with multiple buildings, multiple departments and high staff turnover. Master key systems and restricted key cylinders are common requirements. After-hours working is typically straightforward given college timetables.

What we do

Education locksmith services

All services carried out out of hours wherever possible. Fixed price, direct invoicing available.

Emergency lock repairs

Out-of-hours emergency response for broken locks, failed mechanisms and compromised access points. Typically within 30 minutes across Bristol and South Glos.

Lock changes after staff departure

Re-keying or replacing locks when a member of staff leaves. If restricted key cylinders are already fitted, only the affected cylinder needs replacing — fast and cost-effective.

Restricted key systems

Cylinders and keys that cannot be copied without written authorisation. Full control over who has access and a complete audit trail. Ideal for schools and nurseries managing staff access.

Master key systems

A single master key operates multiple locks across a building or site. Useful for site managers, heads of department and senior staff who need access to multiple areas without carrying a large key ring.

Main entrance & gate security

Ensuring the primary access points to a school or nursery are secure. Lock upgrades, access control assessment, and gate mechanism repairs.

Post-incident security review

Following a security breach, vandalism, or break-in, Sam will assess the affected access points, replace compromised locks and advise on any upgrades appropriate to what happened.

Safeguarding

DBS checked as standard

For any tradesperson working at a school, nursery or college, a current DBS check is not optional — it’s a fundamental safeguarding requirement. Sam holds a current Disclosure and Barring Service check, making him suitable to work at any education premises in Bristol and South Gloucestershire.

The DBS check can be confirmed before any visit if required by your safeguarding policy. We understand that many schools and nurseries need to record the DBS details of any contractor before they arrive on site — just ask when you call and Sam will provide the relevant details.

Out-of-hours as standard. Where the job allows it, AHLP always schedule education premises work outside the school day — before gates open, after pupils and students have left, or during school holidays. This avoids any situation where a contractor needs to be in the building while children are present, which is the preferred approach for most head teachers and nursery managers even where a DBS check is in place.

Access control

Restricted key systems for schools & nurseries

One of the most common security problems in schools is key proliferation — over time, multiple copies of master keys are made for staff convenience, and when a member of staff leaves, nobody can be certain how many copies exist or where they are. The only solution is a full lock change, which is disruptive and expensive.

A restricted key system prevents this from happening in the first place. The cylinders use a patented keyway that cannot be copied at a standard key-cutting shop. Keys can only be duplicated by the authorised supplier, with written sign-off from the designated key holder at your school or nursery.

When a staff member leaves, only the cylinder assigned to their key needs replacing — not every lock on the site. Over time this is significantly cheaper than managing a non-restricted system, and it gives your business manager or site manager a complete, auditable record of who holds which keys.

No unauthorised key copyingKeys cannot be duplicated at a hardware shop — only by the authorised supplier with written permission
Complete audit trailFull record of who holds which keys — useful for Ofsted and safeguarding documentation
Cheaper staff changesOnly the affected cylinder needs replacing when a staff member leaves — not a full re-key of the building
Fits existing doorsRestricted cylinders fit standard lock cases — no need to replace the whole lock body on most doors
Can be combined with master keyRestricted cylinders work within a master key hierarchy — site manager keeps master, staff have individual keys

Your questions answered

Education locksmith FAQs

The questions school business managers and nursery managers ask most.

Yes. Sam holds a current DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check, making him suitable to work at schools, nurseries, colleges and all other education premises. The DBS details can be confirmed before any visit if required by your safeguarding policy or contractor approval process.
Yes — and for education premises it’s our default approach. We always aim to schedule work before the school day begins or after pupils and students have left, and school holidays are ideal for planned upgrades and installations. AHLP are available 7 days a week. Emergency callouts are available 24/7 for situations that can’t wait.
A restricted key system uses cylinders and keys that cannot be copied at a standard key-cutting shop. Keys can only be duplicated by the authorised supplier with written sign-off from your designated key holder. This prevents unauthorised copying by former staff or contractors, gives you a complete audit trail of who holds which keys, and means that when a staff member leaves, only their individual cylinder needs replacing — not a full building re-key. Most schools and nurseries that use one say they wish they’d installed it sooner.
Yes. AHLP can invoice directly to schools, academy trusts, multi-academy trusts, nursery groups, colleges and local authority facilities teams. Mention this when you call and Sam will take the invoicing details — all subsequent jobs will be invoiced accordingly.
Yes — this is one of our most common education premises jobs. If you have a standard cylinder, we replace it with a new one and provide a new set of keys. If you already have a restricted key system, only the affected cylinder needs replacing, which is faster and cheaper. If you don’t have restricted keys yet, we can recommend upgrading at the same time to prevent the same issue recurring with future staff changes.
Yes. Multi-site academy trusts and nursery groups with multiple locations across Bristol and South Gloucestershire are well within our scope. We can set up direct invoicing to the central trust, provide consistent service across all sites, and quote for portfolio-wide restricted key system installations. Call 07700 100146 to discuss your requirements.
Yes — and school holidays are the ideal time for planned work. With the premises empty, there’s no disruption to the school day and no scheduling constraints. Upgrades, restricted key system installations and master key surveys are all well suited to holiday periods. AHLP are available 7 days a week year round.
