5-lever mortice lock installation, repair and replacement across Bristol and South Gloucestershire. BS3621 British Standard — the lock most home insurers require. Fixed price, parts included, same-day service in most cases.
A mortice lock sits inside a pocket — the ‘mortice’ — cut into the body of the door itself. Unlike a Yale-type rim lock, which is surface-mounted and relatively easy to bypass, a mortice lock is recessed into the door with a bolt that extends directly into the door frame when locked. This makes it substantially stronger and far harder to force open.
On most timber front and back doors, the mortice lock is the primary security component. A Yale spring latch alone is not sufficient — it can be opened in seconds with a credit card or by manipulating the latch. A 5-lever mortice deadlock or sashlock is what actually prevents a determined entry on a timber door.
Most home insurance policies require a British Standard BS3621 mortice lock on all external doors as a minimum condition of cover. If your door only has a Yale latch, a rim lock, or a cheaper 2-lever mortice, you may not be fully covered in the event of a break-in. Call 07700 100146 and Sam can advise on what your door currently has and what it needs.
Mortice lock types
The most common type for front and back doors. Has both a latch (catches when the door closes) and a deadbolt (thrown by the key). Meets BS3621. Required by most home insurers.
Deadbolt only — no latch. Used where a separate handle or latch is already fitted. Meets BS3621. Common on back doors and side entrances.
Cheaper option with only 2 internal levers. Easier to pick and not BS3621 compliant. Suitable for internal doors only — not adequate for external security or insurance purposes.
A latch mechanism fitted in a mortice pocket — provides convenience but limited security alone. Usually combined with a separate deadlock on the same door.

Many houses — particularly those sold with only a Yale latch — don’t have a mortice lock at all. If your front or back door doesn’t have one, you’re likely uninsured and vulnerable. We fit and supply same day from £95.
Your policy requires BS3621 and your current lock doesn’t meet it. We assess, supply and fit a compliant 5-lever mortice lock in a single visit. We can confirm compliance in writing if needed.
If entry was gained through a forced or inadequate mortice lock, we replace with a BS3621 5-lever lock that meets insurance requirements. 24/7 emergency response available.
Stiff to turn, key not operating smoothly, or mechanism visibly worn — mortice locks wear over time. Sam will assess whether repair or full replacement is the right call, and give a price before touching anything.
A large proportion of Bristol’s housing stock consists of Victorian and Edwardian terraces — properties built with solid timber doors that require mortice locks as their primary external security. Areas like Clifton, Redland, Cotham, Bishopston, Horfield, Fishponds, Kingswood and Bedminster all have high concentrations of period timber-doored properties.
Many of these doors have been passed through multiple owners over 100+ years. Locks may be original, worn, or replaced with non-compliant alternatives. Sam is familiar with the door sizes and mortice case dimensions common across Bristol’s Victorian and Edwardian stock and carries the most frequently needed British Standard lock sizes on the van.
South Gloucestershire properties — particularly in Thornbury, Yate and the older village stock around the area — similarly have a mix of timber-doored properties where mortice locks are either absent or overdue replacement.
